Environmental Science question: chain reactions linking acorns to moth outbreaks and lyme disease risk?

March 14th, 2009
kphilsx asked:

I have to read a passage then answer some questions about it. Here’s the passage:

Oak trees produce large autumnal acorn crops every 2-5 years, and produce few to no acorns during intervening years. Acorns are critical food for white-footed mice. Mice are important predators of the pupal stage of the gypsy moth. This introduced insect periodically undergoes outbreaks that defoliate millions of hectares of oak forests, decreasing tree growth, survival, and acorn crop production. An abundance of acorns provides food for white-tailed deer. Mice and deer are the primary hosts of the black-legged tick, which carries Lyme disease.

QUESTIONS:

1.) Diagram a food web based on the interrelationships of the organisms identified in the excerpt.

2.) Design a controlled experiment that tests the relationship between acorn production and gypsy moth population. Include the hypothesis that the experiment tests.

thanks soo much!

ethical egg production. no-kill egg farms?

January 21st, 2009
human being asked:

eggs are good for you… they’re a good source of b12 vitamins. I think veganism is unnecessary if eggs can be produced in a humane manner. Eggs for eating aren’t baby animals.. they are essentially a waste product of healthy birds in my opinion. A single duck can comfortably produce eggs to provide enough nutrition to supplement several vegetarians diets. My neighbor has 2 ducks and together they’ve been producing about an egg a day and they seem very happy. When they get old they will still provide good manure for crops.

My question is are there any ethical egg farmers that do not kill or sell their animals to butchers? I think mass egg production is disgusting and inhumane but I would support a small ethical well managed farm.
cholesterol isn’t a bad thing. I’m talking about eating 1-2 eggs a week while getting most of your calories from vegan sources. Eggs are definitely a good source of necessary vitamins and nutrients.
I thought the basis of vegetarianism was to create less suffering for animals? A healthy happy cow can provide us with so many good things.. milk, yogurt, butter, cheese.. When I lived on a commune we had a 3 beautiful cows that were very healthy and happy that came to us to get milked! They provided alot of good nutrition for 20 people. The chickens and ducks left eggs everywhere and they would have rotted if we didn’t pick them up. I think veganism and peta folks want to separate humans and animals because of what horrible things can occur when the two collide.. but there’s an alternative route that I think is much more healthier. I’m not against veganism.. I lived as a strict vegan for 3 years but found it much more satisfying to be able to live with animals that give us such gifts and in return we provided care for them.

Why does so many think Ethanol is the answer?

January 17th, 2009
krazedscot asked:

So…. we decrease our dependence on oil with a material (largely) derived from corn and corn by-products. Doesn’t this set off any alarms with people? How many times have crops failed due to drought, disease, locust, etc? So we take a huge quantity of our nation’s corn crop and convert it into fuel. Then along comes a drought or a reduced growing season… both of which can be a result of global warming. Then the price skyrockets because there is less supply to feed an ever growing demand. And I seriously doubt this country could produce enough ethanol to make a huge dent in our energy needs. So we would be at the mercy of foreign-produced ethanol and back where we started… depending on foreign supplies. I will forever think the best solutions for the regular transportation user is electric. There have been huge advances in this area. Let’s let the power utilities manage the energy production. Demand they produce it cleanly no matter what they use for fuel.
